The Coffee Shop Northeast to Expand

by Mason Sullivan

The Coffee Shop Northeast will celebrate its two-year anniversary on July 1. During its first two years, business has been good. One of their toughest challenges has been that, on occasion, there has not been enough seating when a large number of customers who wish to order beverages and food “for here.”

By the end of July, that problem will be remedied.

An expansion is underway that will more than double the shop’s square footage and increase its seating capacity to around 57 (It currently seats 27). That’s good news for customers who head to the neighborhood establishment with visions of enjoying their goodies in-house.

Hollywood Theater is ready and waiting for the right owner to restore its lustre

Ask any Northeaster of a certain age and you’ll hear a story—a first date, the lush décor, the classic movie featuring the glamorous stars of another day. Ask a 21st century newcomer and you’ll hear a story of a rundown eyesore covered with tattered placards.  Ask a preservationist and you’ll learn just why the Hollywood is an architectural treasure of historic import.  There are clear differences of memory—and opinion—surrounding the Hollywood Theater, 2815 Johnson Northeast in Minneapolis.

The Woman Behind a Musical: Dudley Voigt

by Robin Sauerwein

"I have been making theater with kids pretty much since I was a teenager myself,” Dudley Voigt explained about her work here in the Twin Cities as both an artist and educator.

She arrived in the Twin Cities from Vermont in the early 1990s. Her interests fell primarily in the area of art and social change and she majored in theater at Macalester College. After graduating in 1994, Voigt worked as an intern and guest artist for four years at St. Paul Central’s Central Touring Theater with Jan Mandell. Mandell, a national leader, uses theater to empower urban youth, giving voice to a population whose experiences aren’t often represented in education.
