The City of Minneapolis and Hennepin County are sponsoring collection events to encourage residents to dispose of their household hazardous waste safely and properly. On August 7, 8, and 9, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., you can bring your household hazardous waste to the Pillsbury School parking lot, a convenient site for Eastside residents to bring their problem wastes free of charge. Last year, approximately 2,800 participants properly disposed of over 200,000 pounds of hazardous waste and problem materials at collection events.
Accepted items include: consumer electronics (computers, televisions, VCRs, stereos, radios – limit of 5 of the same type); automotive wastes (fuel additives, starter fluid, waxes, but not motor oil); aerosols, paint; pool, photographic and hobby chemicals; rechargeable appliances (cordless tools, weed whips, etc.); household batteries; drain cleaners; wood preservatives; mercury items (thermostats and thermometers); fluorescent and HID bulbs (limit of 25); pesticides; vehicle lead-acid batteries; driveway sealers. Items are accepted from households only, not businesses. Businesses can call 612-348-3777 to learn more about managing their hazardous and problem wastes.
Items not accepted at this event: Tires; major appliances (refrigerators, air conditioners, washers, dryers, etc.); asbestos; empty paint cans; scrap metal; recyclables (paper, cardboard, cans, etc.); compressed gas cylinders and tanks; motor oil; oil filters; medical waste; garbage (food waste, furniture, carpet, lumber); recyclables (scrap metal, paper, cardboard, cans, bottles, etc.); radioactive waste (e.g., smoke detectors); explosives.
