WingDing 2016

The Audubon Neighborhood Association, together with Audubon Park, Northeast Middle School and Edison High School, invite you to our 7th Annual Spring WingDing!

At Audubon Park, 1320 29th Ave. NE, on Sat., May 7, 11am-2pm.

The theme of our annual neighborhood celebration is on learning how to protect our urban environment. The eco exhibits will include nature presentations from groups like the Audubon Society and 4-H, make-your-own environmentally-friendly household cleaner by the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization, advice from Master Gardeners, a free bicycle check-up clinic, hands on arts-and-craft activities - and more!

Notice of ANA Funds Transfer

The Audubon Neighborhood Association has been awarded an action grant of $50,000 from the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization (MWMO) to construct a rain garden along 29th Avenue NE, in the south parking lot of Northeast Middle School. The project will be funded both by MWMO and the ANA. In order to fully fund the project, ANA announced at the community meeting held on April 4, 2016, that $10,000 is being moved from the Commercial Property Improvement Fund to the Parks and Environment Investment Fund.

Stormwater Study at NE Middle School

Northeast Middle School (NEMS) & the Audubon Neighborhood Association (ANA) were recently awarded a $9640 grant from the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization (MWMO) to study the feasibility of a storm water management project on school grounds. ANA is also contributing an additional $2000 to the study, which will be undertaken by a consulting firm.

Once the study has determined the feasibility of storm water run-off reduction measures, ANA and NEMS intend to apply for an action grant from MWMO to fund the implementation of a project. NEMS students will be involved in both the feasibility study and the proposed implementation, lending a significant educational component to the process.

This project was inspired by the larger MWMO-funded storm water mitigation project undertaken at Edison High School.

Makeover at the Middle School

submitted by Dr. Benjamin Perry, Principal, Northeast Middle School

When students and staff entered Northeast Middle School on Aug. 25, they were greeted with a hot breakfast and a fresh new look.

Students will begin their school day five minutes earlier at 9:25 a.m. to accommodate a revamped "Advisory" or home room period. Students will no longer eat breakfast in the cafeteria before school, but in their respective Advisory classrooms. The initiative is based on research that shows serving breakfast in the classroom encouraged more students to eat a nutritious morning meal, which positively impacted both academic performance and classroom behavior. Breakfast is free of charge to every student.

The new Advisory class not only serves breakfast, but provides students the opportunity to learn social and organizational skills, participate in service-learning projects and take on student leadership roles.
