Notice of ANA Funds Transfer

The Audubon Neighborhood Association has been awarded an action grant of $50,000 from the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization (MWMO) to construct a rain garden along 29th Avenue NE, in the south parking lot of Northeast Middle School. The project will be funded both by MWMO and the ANA. In order to fully fund the project, ANA announced at the community meeting held on April 4, 2016, that $10,000 is being moved from the Commercial Property Improvement Fund to the Parks and Environment Investment Fund.

Stormwater Study at NE Middle School

Northeast Middle School (NEMS) & the Audubon Neighborhood Association (ANA) were recently awarded a $9640 grant from the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization (MWMO) to study the feasibility of a storm water management project on school grounds. ANA is also contributing an additional $2000 to the study, which will be undertaken by a consulting firm.

Once the study has determined the feasibility of storm water run-off reduction measures, ANA and NEMS intend to apply for an action grant from MWMO to fund the implementation of a project. NEMS students will be involved in both the feasibility study and the proposed implementation, lending a significant educational component to the process.

This project was inspired by the larger MWMO-funded storm water mitigation project undertaken at Edison High School.

Middle School October Update

Another academic year is underway at Northeast Middle School, and students and staff are again hard at work. A variety of new (and returning) programs and systems are in place this year. Here are a few of the highlights.

The Woman Behind a Musical: Dudley Voigt

by Robin Sauerwein

"I have been making theater with kids pretty much since I was a teenager myself,” Dudley Voigt explained about her work here in the Twin Cities as both an artist and educator.

She arrived in the Twin Cities from Vermont in the early 1990s. Her interests fell primarily in the area of art and social change and she majored in theater at Macalester College. After graduating in 1994, Voigt worked as an intern and guest artist for four years at St. Paul Central’s Central Touring Theater with Jan Mandell. Mandell, a national leader, uses theater to empower urban youth, giving voice to a population whose experiences aren’t often represented in education.

Interview with Pat Palan, Vice Principal of Northeast Middle School

How long have you been a VP at NEMS?

I’ve been Assistant Principal for one year and a few months prior to that I worked at Seward Montessori then Edison High School then Roosevelt for 5 years. Before that I worked as a psycho-therapist and mental health manager for an HMO prior to that I taught in an alternative high school, The City, Inc., and was director of their girls’ group home.

What do you like about NEMS?
